Workshop overview
The Aged Care Act 2024 introduced a new supported decision-making framework that places older people at the centre of decisions about their care and services. This workshop provides an overview of the roles, responsibilities, and legal distinctions between registered supporters and appointed decision makers within the aged care system.
Participants will explore how the supported decision-making model operates in practice, the different types of registered supporters and appointed decision makers and the obligations providers have when sharing information, obtaining consent, and recognising legal authority.
The session will also examine the compliance requirements under the Aged Care Act 2024 and the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.
Who should attend?
This workshop is designed for managers, team leaders and care partners across residential aged care, Support at Home and CHSP, including anyone working in roles that directly support older people, their registered supporters or appointed decision-makers.
The outcomes are:

- describe the different categories of registered supporters’ (supporter, supporter lite and supporter guardian) and understand the differences in their access to information
- identify the roles, responsibilities and limitations of registered supporters
- differentiate between registered supporters and appointed decision-makers
- recognise the legal authority of appointed decision-makers including the legal authorities that enable substitute decision-making
- determine who has authority to make, communicate and sign decisions in aged care situations based on the type and scope of legal appointment
- verify and document decision-making authority in accordance with compliance requirements
- recognise common risks and compliance issues, including assumptions about capacity, inappropriate reliance on supporters, and inadequate documentation.
