Ageing Australia congratulates the ALP on South Australia election win

Ageing Australia congratulates the Australian Labor Party on its election victory and welcomes its commitments to strengthen aged care services for older South Australians.

Ageing Australia CEO Tom Symondson said the sector looks forward to working with the returned Malinauskas government to deliver initiatives that will expand aged care capacity and support the state’s ageing population.

“We congratulate the Malinauskas Government on its election win and welcome its strong commitments to expanding aged care capacity in South Australia,” Mr Symondson said.

The Malinauskas Government has committed to establishing a $250 million no-interest loan scheme to help deliver up to 650 aged care beds across South Australia.

It has also announced a dedicated Health and Aged Care Precinct at the former Women’s and Children’s Hospital site, which will include around 600 beds to help integrate health and aged care services.

To support older patients transitioning from hospital into appropriate care, the Malinauskas Government will also re-activate the College Grove aged care home, delivering a further 70 beds.

“These commitments recognise that investing in aged care benefits both older Australians and the broader health system,” Mr Symondson said.

“Australia’s population is rapidly ageing. Over the next 40 years the number of people aged over 85 will triple, and we need to ensure the right services and infrastructure are in place.”

“Expanding aged care capacity improves the lives of older people, while also helping relieve pressure on hospitals.”

Ageing Australia looks forward to continuing to work with the Malinauskas Government to support older South Australians and ensure the aged care sector can meet future demand.
