The Regional, Rural and Remote Home Care Workforce Support Program (RRR HCWSP) is helping to address this challenge by connecting home care providers in eligible regions with work-ready candidates who are eager to build meaningful careers in home care.
Funded by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, the RRR HCWSP is being delivered in North West Tasmania and Shepperton, Victoria by Ageing Australia. The goal is to connect 4,000 job seekers to providers to support the regions need for quality aged care.
Through personalised recruitment support, marketing campaigns, candidate matching and ongoing guidance, this program helps providers access a motivated workforce.
One person whose journey highlights the impact of the program is Harpreet.
After recently moving to a regional community, Harpreet had completed her studies in individual support and was determined to begin a career in aged care. She was passionate about helping older people maintain their independence and dignity while remaining in their own homes.
“I really like to help older people. They want to keep their independence but still need support with their daily routines. I love being able to help while keeping their privacy and dignity,” she said.
Despite applying for numerous positions, finding employment proved difficult.
“I had moved to a new regional area and had very little experience. I was applying for lots of jobs, but I wasn’t really getting replies back from companies.”
Through the program, the RRR HCWSP team were able to promptly assist Harpreet in finding a suitable role with a provider that made sense for her.
Working closely with one of Ageing Australia’s Workforce Support Officers, she received personalised assistance throughout the recruitment process. Rather than navigating applications alone, she was connected directly with providers, kept informed of opportunities and supported every step of the way.
“The help was very fast. My assigned Workforce Support Officer was replying promptly, getting back to the company and then getting back to me if they needed anything. The fast communication made it better for me.”
The result was exactly what Harpreet had been working towards: a role with a home care provider where she is now making a difference every day.
“One of the best things is the flexibility. I can work around my availability with my child.”
She now encourages others considering a career in home care to take the leap.
“It’s a really perfect balance between your personal life and your professional life. You’re working, you’re earning and you’re still able to manage your home and your kids as well.”
